Visit to the Museo do Mar de Galicia – Cultural activity in Spanish in Vigo

Would you like to practice Spanish in a real environment, surrounded by history and the sea?

We invite you to a unique experience: a guided visit to the Museo do Mar de Galicia, organized by Jarcha Español.

The activity is open to all levels, with a recommended minimum of A2, so you can enjoy it comfortably and participate actively.

Activity details

  • Date: Friday, November 7
  • Time: 10:00
  • Duration: Approx. 1h 15min
  • Location: Museo do Mar de Galicia. Avenida Atlántida, 160 – 36208 Vigo
  • Language: Clear and adapted Spanish

What will we do?

We’ll begin with a fun proposal to activate attention and Spanish from the very start.

We’ll explore the permanent exhibition, where the sea and the history of Galicia meet. During the visit:

  • Discover the evolution of Galician merchant shipping through models, instruments, and life-on-board objects.
  • Learn about maritime pilgrimages to Santiago, from the Apostle’s Traslatio to modern journeys like the Irish curragh Naomh Gobnait.
  • Explore the history of diving and underwater exploration, with original suits and the torpedo-launching submarine by Sanjurjo Badía.
  • Visit the Scientific Cabinet, with deep-sea creatures and fish from international fishing grounds.
  • See the 10-meter sperm whale skeleton, Darwin’s Beagle model, and key oceanography pieces.
  • Reflect on maritime disasters like the Prestige, and the role of Galician volunteers.

We’ll also talk about the sea as work and shared life:

  • Galician fishing industry: trades, tools, engines, conflicts, and ways of life.
  • The role of women in sea industries (as obreiras), invisible protagonists of factories and fish markets.
  • The seafaring family and children who grew up among nets, remembered in poems like Mariñeira, by Ramón Cabanillas.
  • How fishing drove Galicia’s industrial revolution, creating new industries and services.
  • Sector crises, environmental impact, and the role of shipbuilding in Vigo’s recent history.
  • We’ll also mention the film Mondays in the Sun, reflecting the social wounds left by industrial restructuring.
  • At the end of the indoor tour, we’ll step outside to visit the museum’s aquarium and the Castro da Punta do Muíño do Vento, an ancient Celtic settlement inhabited between the 8th century BCE and the 1st century CE.

All of this will be an opportunity to learn Spanish in context, expand vocabulary, practice listening, and connect the language with Galicia’s living history.

Why join?

Because learning Spanish isn’t just about studying the language… It’s about living it from within: through its culture, history, and people. And the Museo do Mar is also a place to remember those who lived from the sea, worked it, suffered it, and transformed it. A chance to learn Spanish through emotion, memory, and reality.
